From books like the Faraway tree to Alice in Wonderland, mushrooms brought a world of magic and delight to my life. By late September they emerge from ancient trees, a glut of tempting danger and delight; Chicken in the woods, Beefsteak, Penny Bun and so many more. Their very names make my mouth water.
But there’s more to mushrooms than a delicious meal. They provide trees with access to nutrients and enable trees to communicate with each other warning of droughts or insect attacks. Fungi also play a crucial role in breaking down dead plant matter, allowing new plant life to thrive. Without these fungi, forests would struggle to regenerate and support a diverse array of species. No wonder mushrooms have seeped into our myths and legends, bringing magic and supernatural powers.
